Life is short.
There just isn't enough time in life to bond with your kids, especially with how fast life is moving today. Everything is going faster and we're missing each other.
We're working to live, but we're forgetting to live.
I think about my own dad. He worked hard, and when I look back, I remember him working, working, working. One of the strongest memories I still have is the time we spent fishing together. Those moments stayed with me.
I don't want that for Zachary. He's 14 now (as we started planning). Boxing is something we share and it's a special part of our relationship, but I want more. I want us to explore, travel, fish, camp, meet people, see places we've never seen and experience things together.
One day Zachary will be an adult. I don't want him to look back and remember Dad was always working. I want him to look back and say, 'Dad and I did that together.'
And I hope NZ 2028 inspires other people too. It doesn't have to be a father and son. It could be a mother and daughter, a father and daughter, a mother and son, grandparents and grandchildren, or any family. You don't need two jet skis or a trip around New Zealand. You just need to make the time.
If someone watches what we're doing and thinks, 'Maybe I should take my son fishing,' or 'Maybe I should take my daughter camping,' or simply puts the phone down and spends a day with their family, then this expedition has already achieved something important.
